What is Slither.io?

Slither.io is a multiplayer snake game played on a large circular map. Every player controls a snake that moves on its own. Eating the glowing orbs scattered around the map makes your snake longer, and the goal is to become the biggest snake on the leaderboard.

The twist is that snakes do not die by running into themselves. You die when your head hits another snake’s body, and other snakes die when their head hits yours. When a snake dies, it bursts into a trail of large orbs that anyone can eat. The Gipcus version runs at gipcus.com/game/slither-io-snake-game/, with nothing to install.

How to play Slither.io (controls)

  1. Open Slither.io on Gipcus, type a nickname, and pick a skin if you want one.
  2. Press Play. Your snake starts moving straight away.
  3. Steer by moving your mouse. Your snake follows the pointer. On a phone, drag your finger in the direction you want to go.
  4. Hold the left mouse button or Space to boost. On mobile, use the boost control or double tap and hold.
  5. Eat orbs to grow. Stay away from the red edge of the map, because touching it ends your run.

Your head is the only part that can die

Everything in Slither.io comes from one rule: a crash only kills the snake whose head made contact. That means a small snake can kill a huge one by getting in front of it, and a huge snake can trap small ones without ever touching them head-on.

  • Cutting off is the basic kill. Boost past another snake and turn across its path so its head runs into your side.
  • Coiling is the big-snake move. Circle a smaller snake with your body and slowly close the loop until it has nowhere to go.
  • Head-on danger is the most common way to die. Never point your head at the side of a snake that is moving fast nearby.

Boosting costs you length, so use it on purpose

Boosting makes your snake much faster, but you shrink while you do it and drop small orbs behind you. A short boost to cut someone off or escape a trap is worth it. Holding boost just to travel faster wastes the length you worked for.

The best orbs come from fights. When a big snake dies, it leaves a bright trail of large orbs. Move toward a nearby crash quickly but carefully, because other snakes are rushing the same food.

Tips for a longer Slither.io snake

  • Play safe early. A small snake grows fastest by eating orbs in quiet areas, not by chasing kills.
  • Follow big snakes from a distance. They cause most of the crashes, and you can eat what they leave behind.
  • Circle when you are threatened. Wrapping your body around your own head blocks attackers while you wait for an opening.
  • Watch the minimap and edge. Running out of room near the border is an easy way to get trapped.
  • Do not boost into crowds. At high speed you have less time to react to a snake turning into you.
  • Restart fast. Every run starts from scratch, so short practice runs build the reflexes you need for the big ones.

Is Slither.io free to play on Gipcus?

Yes. Slither.io on Gipcus is free and runs in your browser, so there is no download or account needed. It works on desktop and mobile, though a mouse gives you the most precise steering.
