Quick answer: Google Snake has 23 modes, picked from the trophy row in Settings: Classic, Wall, Portal, Cheese, Borderless, Twin, Winged, Yin Yang, Key, Sokoban, Poison, Dimension, Minesweeper, Statue, Light, Shield, Arrow, Hotdog, Magnet, Gate, Bridge, Peaceful and Blender. Each changes one rule. Blender, the last icon, lets you mix several modes at once.
By Ashish Sharma · Updated November 1, 2026 · How we tested: we loaded every mode in the live game at google.com/fbx?fbx=snake_arcade on default settings (Standard map, Normal speed, one apple), ate the first apple and made a turn, and captured the board each time. We also built a 20-mode Blender mix and played it.
In Short
- All 23 modes sit on one row in Settings, marked with trophy icons.
- Most mode tricks appear after your first apple, and each mode adds its own counter next to the apple score.
- Easiest: Peaceful (you can’t die). Hardest to beat: Gate, according to the community wiki.
- Blender’s gear opens a 5 x 5 grid where you can switch on as many modes as you like.
Where do you change the mode in Google Snake?
In Settings, on the row with the gold trophy. Press Settings on the start menu. The first row picks the apple, the second row picks the mode, and the rows below set the apple count, speed, map size, snake colour and board theme. Click a trophy icon to select that mode, then press Play.

What does each Google Snake mode do?
Each mode adds one twist to Classic Snake, and most show it after the first apple. The table lists all 23 in the order the game shows them, what changes, what we saw in our live test, and how hard it felt compared with Classic. Rule details we could not see in a short test come from the Google Snake community wiki.
| # | Mode | What changes | What we saw in our test | Vs Classic (our take) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Classic | Plain Snake: eat an apple, grow one square, don’t crash. | One apple, no extras. | Baseline |
| 2 | Wall | A wall block appears on every odd apple (1st, 3rd, 5th…). Hit one and the run ends. | A wall block spawned after apple 1 and the wall counter read 1. | Harder |
| 3 | Portal | Apples come in pairs. Eat one and your head comes out of the other. | Two apples on the board from the start. | Harder |
| 4 | Cheese | Every other body square is a gap you can pass through. Each apple adds a solid square and a gap. | The body showed alternating solid squares and gaps. | Easier to move, lower max score |
| 5 | Borderless | No border: the board wraps around and the camera follows your head. You still die hitting yourself. | The apple showed on both edges of the screen. | Easier |
| 6 | Twin | After every apple, head and tail swap, and you head off the way your tail pointed. | After apple 1 the snake turned around and ran left from its old tail. | Much harder |
| 7 | Winged | Apples bounce around the board off walls, bodies and each other. | The apple drifted to a new spot between our captures. | Harder |
| 8 | Yin Yang | A second, opposite-coloured snake mirrors every move you make. Crash into it, or let it crash, and you lose. | An orange mirror snake; our run ended moments after our first turn. | Much harder |
| 9 | Key | Eat the gold key to make the apple appear inside its dark lock square. Locks act as walls. | A gold key ring and a dark lock square, no apple yet. | Puzzle |
| 10 | Sokoban | Apples are hidden in crates. Push a crate onto the bullseye tile to open it. | An orange crate and a faint bullseye target. | Puzzle |
| 11 | Poison | A grey apple sits next to the red one. Eat it and you lose control while the snake turns at random. | A grey apple beside the red one. | Harder |
| 12 | Dimension | Apples and body squares are split across two dimensions. Each apple switches you to the other one. | A faded apple from the other dimension. | Much harder |
| 13 | Minesweeper | Each apple drops a flag with a danger zone. Touch the flag, or stay in the zone for 4 ticks, and you die. | A flag in a dashed square right after apple 1. | Much harder |
| 14 | Statue | Each apple turns your body into stone you can crash into. Stone cracks and breaks after more apples. | A dark stone segment left where the body had been. | Much harder |
| 15 | Light | The board is dark. A small light follows your head and grows for a moment when you eat. New apples glow, then fade. | A dark board with light circles around the head and the apple. | Much harder |
| 16 | Shield | Apples are guarded by 1 to 3 shields, so you must reach them from an open side. | An apple with shield brackets on two sides. | Harder |
| 17 | Arrow | Every turn leaves an arrow. Enter that square again and you are forced to turn the same way; going against it is a crash. | Arrows appeared on the squares where we had turned. | Much harder |
| 18 | Hotdog | Bun walls grow beside your body, so you can’t make two turns in a row. | Blue bun walls on both sides of the body. | Much harder |
| 19 | Magnet | Apples slide toward your head when you get close. | The apple moved toward the snake, leaving a short trail. | Easier |
| 20 | Gate | Every odd apple adds a dotted line. Cross it and you come out shifted to the other side. | A dotted gate line appeared after apple 1. | Hardest |
| 21 | Bridge | Every odd apple adds a 1 x 1 dotted box. Enter it and you come out the opposite side. | A dotted box appeared after apple 1. | Much harder |
| 22 | Peaceful | You can’t die. Edges wrap, and the game ends when the board is full. | Same board as Classic, with an extra icon in the top bar. | Easiest |
| 23 | Blender | Mixes any modes you pick from a grid behind the gear icon. | With 20 modes on, the board went dark and filled with keys, locks, a mirror snake and shields. | Depends on the mix |

Which Google Snake modes are easiest?
Peaceful is the easiest, followed by Magnet and Borderless. In Peaceful you can’t die, so it is the best way to see a full board: the wiki puts the end at 87 apples on Small, 252 on Standard and 501 on Large. Magnet pulls apples toward you, and Borderless removes the walls that end most Classic runs. Cheese is easy to move in because you can pass through the gaps in your body, but each apple adds two squares, so the board fills about twice as fast. The wiki lists typical Cheese maximums of about 125 to 128 on Standard.
Which Google Snake modes are hardest?
Gate is the hardest to beat, and Twin, Yin Yang, Statue and Hotdog are the ones most likely to end a run early. The wiki’s Gate page says gates can spawn in spots that make filling the board impossible, so you can’t win every attempt. In our tests, Twin flipped us around after the very first apple and Yin Yang’s mirror snake ended a run moments after our first turn. Statue and Hotdog fill the board with obstacles made from your own body, and Light hides the board, so plan routes before the apple’s glow fades.

How do you play all Google Snake modes at once?
Select Blender, tap the gear and switch on every mode in the grid. Blender is the last icon on the trophy row. Its grid holds a random-mix tile plus 21 modes, from Wall to Peaceful. We switched on 20 of them (everything except Peaceful) and the game started straight away.
- Open Google Snake: Search “snake game” on Google and press Play, or open google.com/fbx?fbx=snake_arcade.
- Open Settings: Press Settings on the start menu.
- Scroll the trophy row: Find the row with the gold trophy (the second row) and scroll it all the way to the last icon, the purple blender.
- Tap the gear: With Blender selected, tap the gear at the top right of the menu to open the mode grid.
- Pick your modes: Tap each mode you want. The question-mark tile is a random mix and is on by default; picking modes switches it off.
- Go back and press Play: Tap the back arrow at the top left, then press Play.
Our 20-mode board was dark from Light, had an orange mirror snake from Yin Yang, key rings and lock squares from Key, a gapped body from Cheese and shielded apples from Shield, all within the first second. Expect very short runs until you learn which hazards to watch.

Which mode should you try first?
Start with Borderless or Magnet, then move to Portal and Wall. They keep Classic’s feel but teach one new idea each: wrapping edges, moving apples, teleporting and avoiding blocks. Save Key and Sokoban for when you want a puzzle, since you must plan a route to the key or crate before you can score. If your goal is a full-board win, learn the loop in our Google Snake loop pattern guide on Classic first. It also works in Peaceful, Borderless and Magnet, because none of them add obstacles.

Frequently asked questions
How many modes does Google Snake have?
23. We counted 23 trophy icons on the mode row in the live game on November 1, 2026, from Classic to Blender. Blender is a mixer, so 22 modes have their own rules.
How do you play all Google Snake modes at once?
Open Settings, scroll the trophy row to the last icon (Blender), tap the gear at the top right of the menu, then tap every mode in the grid. We turned on 20 at once and the game started normally.
What is the easiest Google Snake mode?
Peaceful, because you can’t die and the edges wrap around. Magnet and Borderless are the easiest modes where you can still lose.
What is the hardest Google Snake mode?
The Google Snake wiki calls Gate the hardest mode to beat, because gates can spawn in places that make filling the board impossible. Twin, Yin Yang and Statue are close behind in our experience.
How do you change the mode after a run?
Modes are picked in Settings before you press Play. When a run ends, open Settings from the end menu, pick a new trophy and start again.
Does each mode have its own score counter?
Yes. In our test every mode except Classic added its own icon and counter next to the apple score, such as a wall count in Wall mode and a cheese count in Cheese mode.
