Quick answer: No, shared Wi-Fi alone won’t get your Roblox account banned. In a DevForum update on account bans, Roblox said sharing an IP address or network, or having a banned family member, isn’t enough on its own. Linked-account bans need several device, behaviour and identity signals, and only follow severe violations. Roblox also paused a faulty username scan.
By Ashish Sharma · Updated November 3, 2026 · How we checked: we read Roblox’s staff announcement on the Developer Forum in full, the Roblox Support appeals article (updated November 3) and Roblox’s October 27 reply on X, and checked how in-game bans handle alts in Roblox’s Ban API documentation. Quotes are from those pages.
In Short
- Shared Wi-Fi, a shared IP or a banned sibling is not a ban reason by itself, Roblox says.
- Alt accounts are banned only when a linked account commits a severe violation, such as child endangerment, real-world harm or hate speech.
- Bans tied to old usernames you don’t recognize (shown as “ro ***”) are a Roblox error. The scan behind them is paused.
- Appeals still close after 30 days (6 months in the EU), and each case gets one review.
Why did Roblox post an update on alt detection?
Because of a wave of “enforcement bans” that players said hit innocent accounts. In late October, hundreds of players and creators reported terminations for being linked to accounts they didn’t own. A DevForum thread on the ban wave opened on October 24 collected cases. A post on X warning that IP-based bans could “ban a whole school or hotel” passed 120,000 views. Roblox replied on October 27 that sharing a network “at home, school, a library, or a mall, is not on its own a reason” to act. Then, on November 2 (US time), Roblox staff posted the full update.
The post drew about 3,000 views and 460 likes on the DevForum in its first 11 hours, and players were still asking about stuck appeals in the replies.
Can shared Wi-Fi or a sibling get your Roblox account banned?
Not on its own, according to Roblox. The FAQ in the update answers both directly. On Wi-Fi: “Sharing an IP address or Wi-Fi network by itself isn’t a reason we’d take action on an account.” On family: you can’t be banned because a family member, roommate or friend is banned “solely for that reason.”
That doesn’t mean linked bans are gone. When an account is banned for a severe violation, Roblox says it also moderates “high confidence alt accounts,” found by combining “device, behavior, and identity signals.” It won’t say which signals, so that banned users can’t dodge them. Our read: since device signals count, sharing a tablet or PC with someone is riskier than sharing a router. Roblox’s own safety tips are: don’t buy, sell or share accounts, use unique passwords and turn on 2-step verification.

What counts as a severe violation on Roblox?
Serious breaches that put other users at risk. Roblox lists child endangerment, real-world harm and hate speech. Repeated lower-level violations can also lead to an account ban if you keep ignoring warnings. One line in the post matters for creators: “our system cannot determine intent.” Content that looks like a violation gets flagged even if you meant no harm. Some creators in the October ban-wave thread reported exactly that: accounts actioned over old catalog tags they had copied years ago. For Marketplace items flagged over description wording, Roblox says it is now rolling out lighter penalties for a first mistake than for repeat offences.
What should you do if you got a “ro ***” or unknown-account ban?
Appeal it. Roblox admits these cases are its mistake. The update says bans tied to “a username from years ago” or shown as “ro ***” are “an error on our end,” and the scan that caused them is paused. It doesn’t say whether accounts already banned will be restored automatically, and players in the replies were asking exactly that. Until Roblox says more, appeal yourself:
- Open the moderation notice. It says whether you can appeal through Violations & Appeals or the Roblox Support form.
- Send the appeal from the email address linked to the banned account. Roblox only discusses a case with the account holder, so friends can’t appeal for you.
- Include your username and a short explanation. Say you don’t recognize the linked account and mention the paused username scan.
- Send it once, within 30 days of the ban (6 months in the EU). Duplicate appeals are ignored, and a reviewed case can’t be reviewed again.

For creators, there’s a new Issues & appeals page on Creator Hub (Creations > [Game] > Safety > Issues & appeals). Any collaborator with edit permissions can now view a game’s violations and appeal, not just the owner. Games in Roblox Select also get 72 hours to fix lower-severity violations before restrictions kick in. Roblox says more takedown types will become appealable “in the coming months.”
Does the update cover bans inside Roblox games?
No, and this is the part most players miss. The update is about Roblox’s own account bans. A ban inside a single game is set by that game’s creators. Many use Roblox’s Ban API, and its documentation says it tries to ban alt accounts too unless the creator sets ExcludeAltAccounts to true (the default is false). So a sibling’s ban in one game can still lock you out of that game, even though it can’t touch your Roblox account. Contact that game’s team, usually through its group or Discord. One DevForum reply under the update asked for a proper way to appeal game bans, and Roblox hasn’t announced one.

FAQ
Can I get banned on Roblox for using school or library Wi-Fi?
No, not for that alone. Roblox says sharing an IP address or Wi-Fi network at home, school, a library or a mall is not on its own a reason to act on an account. It combines several signals before it links accounts.
Will my account be banned if my brother or sister gets banned?
Not solely for that reason, Roblox says. It looks at multiple signals together, not just a shared household. If it happens anyway, the banned account’s owner has to appeal, from the email on that account.
What does a Roblox ban for ‘ro ***’ or an unknown username mean?
Roblox calls these cases an error on its end. A scan linked some accounts to old usernames their owners didn’t recognize. Roblox has paused that scan and says it’s working to fix the notices.
How long do I have to appeal a Roblox ban?
30 days from the moderation action, or 6 months for EU users under the Digital Services Act. Once a case has been reviewed it can’t be reviewed again, so put everything in your first appeal.
Can a Roblox game ban my alt accounts too?
Yes. Games can use Roblox’s Ban API, which also tries to ban a player’s alt accounts unless the creator turns that off. That’s the game’s own ban, not a Roblox account ban, so ask the game’s team first.
