Ludo rules in 30 seconds

  • Each player has four tokens in a home yard. A token usually needs a 6 to come out onto the board.
  • Tokens move clockwise by the number rolled and finish by reaching the home column of their own colour.
  • Landing on an opponent’s token sends it back to its yard. Safe squares (often marked with a star) protect tokens from capture.
  • Rolling a 6 normally gives an extra roll. The first player to get all four tokens home wins.

House rules differ between apps, so check the game’s own rules screen for details like whether three 6s in a row cancel your turn.

7 Ludo strategy tips to win more games

1. Get more than one token out early

One token on the board gives you only one move per roll. With two or three tokens out, every roll has options, so you can pick the move that captures, escapes or lands on a safe square.

2. Don’t race a single token all the way home

Rushing one token feels good, but the rest stay stuck in the yard waiting for 6s. Spread your progress so you are never wasting rolls late in the game.

3. Count the danger zone behind you

An opponent token one to six squares behind yours can hit you on its next roll. Before moving, check which squares are in reach of enemy tokens and avoid stopping there when you have a choice.

4. Use safe squares as rest stops

Parking on a star or start square lets you wait for a better roll without risk. It is the simplest way to cut losses when opponents are close.

5. Capture when it costs you little

Knocking out a token that has travelled far is a huge swing. Take captures that land you on a safe square or out of reach, and think twice when the capture leaves your token exposed in front of two enemies.

6. Block with two tokens where rules allow

Many Ludo versions treat two of your tokens on one square as a block opponents cannot pass. If your version supports it, a block right in front of a rival’s home stretch can stall them for several turns.

7. Save the home stretch for exact rolls

Once a token enters its home column it is safe, so there is no hurry. Use big rolls on tokens that are still in danger and let small rolls finish tokens near home.

FAQ

Is Ludo pure luck?
