Chess tips for beginners and free chess on Gipcus

New to chess, or keep losing quick games online? These chess tips for beginners cover the handful of habits that win most low-rated games: safe openings, not hanging pieces, and simple checkmates. Practise each one free with Chess Online on Gipcus — no download, no account.

Chess rules in 60 seconds

  • White moves first; players alternate one move at a time.
  • Pawns move forward one square (two on their first move) and capture diagonally.
  • Knights jump in an L shape; bishops move diagonally; rooks move in straight lines; the queen combines both.
  • The king moves one square. You win by checkmate — the king is attacked and has no legal escape.
  • Special moves: castling, en passant and pawn promotion (usually to a queen).

8 chess tips for beginners that actually win games

1. Control the centre early

Open with a centre pawn (e4 or d4 as White). Pieces in the middle of the board reach more squares and attack more of your opponent’s position.

2. Develop knights and bishops before the queen

Bringing the queen out on move two looks aggressive but lets your opponent chase it while developing for free. Get your minor pieces out first.

3. Castle in the first ten moves

Castling tucks your king behind pawns and connects your rooks. Many beginner losses come from a king stuck in the centre.

4. Run a blunder check before every move

Ask two questions: “What does my opponent’s last move attack?” and “Is the piece I’m moving safe on its new square?” This one habit saves more games than any opening.

5. Know the piece values

Pawn 1, knight 3, bishop 3, rook 5, queen 9. Use these to judge trades — giving a rook for a knight is usually a bad deal.

6. Look for checks, captures and threats

On every move, scan for forcing moves first. Forks (one piece attacking two) and pins win material in most beginner games.

7. Learn two basic checkmates

Practise king + queen vs king and king + rook vs king. Push the enemy king to the edge, then deliver mate. Winning positions are often thrown away here.

8. Watch for stalemate

If the opponent has no legal move and is not in check, the game is a draw. When you’re far ahead, always leave the enemy king a square.
