Quick answer: The Google Pac-Man Doodle has 256 levels, and level 256 is a deliberate kill screen you can’t clear. Click Insert Coin twice for two-player mode: Ms. Pac-Man joins on W, A, S, D while Pac-Man uses the arrow keys, and you share three lives. It’s still free to play at google.com/logos/2010/pacman10-i.html.
By Ashish Sharma · Updated November 5, 2026 · How we tested: we played the original Doodle on google.com in one- and two-player mode and read its game file (pacman10-hp.12.js). The level count, lives, bonus life, dot count, fright times, fruit and ghost rules below come from that code, not from memory of the arcade game.
In Short
- Levels: 256. Level 256 is the kill screen. Levels 21 and up all play the same.
- 2 player: press Insert Coin twice. Simultaneous play, separate scores, one shared pool of lives.
- Lives: 3, plus 1 bonus life per player after 10,000 points.
- Maze: shaped like the Google logo, with 270 dots and 5 power pellets (the arcade has 240 and 4).
Google put Pac-Man on its homepage on May 21, 2010, for the game’s 30th birthday. It was Google’s first playable Doodle, and the “Insert Coin” button took the place of “I’m Feeling Lucky”. Wikipedia and 2010 news posts cover the launch, but none of them list what changes from level to level. This guide does, straight from the game’s code. For general arcade strategy, see our Pac-Man tips and ghost patterns.
Where can you play Google Pac-Man today?
On Google itself, at google.com/logos/2010/pacman10-i.html. That’s the original 2010 game file. We loaded it on November 5, 2026 and it starts on its own after a few seconds, with sound. There’s no download and no sign-in.
- PC: arrow keys move Pac-Man.
- Phone or tablet: swipe in the direction you want to turn. It works, but it’s much harder than a keyboard.
- Sound: the speaker icon in the top right corner turns it off.
How many levels does Google Pac-Man have?
256. The game reads its settings from a table of 21 levels. Level 21 and every level after it use the last, hardest row. When the counter reaches 256, the code switches on the kill screen on purpose, copying the bug in the 1980 arcade game: the right half of the maze turns into garbled tiles and you can’t eat enough dots to finish. In practice that means level 256 is the end. There is no level 257.
Coffee-break cutscenes play after levels 2, 5, 9, 13 and 17, just like the arcade.
How do you play 2 player on Google Pac-Man?
Click Insert Coin a second time. On the 2010 homepage that meant pressing the button twice. The game restarts with Ms. Pac-Man next to Pac-Man and both of you play at once. We tested it: the screen shows two scores and one row of spare lives.

| Player | Character | Controls | Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Pac-Man | Arrow keys | Left counter |
| 2 | Ms. Pac-Man | W, A, S, D | Right counter |
Three rules matter in two-player mode:
- Lives are shared. The game keeps one life counter for both players. A death by either player costs a life, and the game ends for both when it runs out.
- Bonus lives are per player. Each player earns one extra life when their own score passes 10,000, so a team can bank two.
- W, A, S, D only work in two-player mode. In a one-player game they do nothing, so a solo player can’t use them.
How many lives do you get, and when is the bonus life?
You start with 3 lives and get 1 bonus life after 10,000 points. The bonus is a one-time award per player, and the game won’t let you hold more than 5. Ten thousand points comes fast if you eat ghosts. Without them, a level’s dots and pellets only add up to 2,950.
How is Google Pac-Man different from the arcade game?
The maze spells “Google” and has more to eat. Everything else, from the ghost personalities to the fruit and the speeds, follows the 1980 arcade game closely.
| Feature | Google Doodle (2010) | Arcade Pac-Man (1980) |
|---|---|---|
| Maze | Wide, shaped around the Google logo | Tall classic maze |
| Small dots | 270 | 240 |
| Power pellets | 5 (one inside the first G) | 4 |
| Points per level from dots and pellets | 2,950 | 2,600 |
| Two players | Simultaneous, Ms. Pac-Man, shared lives | Take turns |
| Last level | 256 (kill screen) | 256 (kill screen) |
How long do ghosts stay blue on each level?
6 seconds on level 1, shrinking to 1 second by level 9, and none at all on levels 17, 19 and 21 onward. Some later levels bump it back up (5 seconds on levels 6 and 10, 3 seconds on level 14), and those are your best chances for big ghost points.

The full table below comes from the Doodle’s level data. “Blinky speeds up” is how many dots are left when the red ghost speeds up. He gets faster again at half that number.
| Level | Ghosts blue for | Fruit and points | Blinky speeds up at | Cutscene after |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 6 s | Cherry 100 | 20 | |

How do you get a high score in Google Pac-Man?
Eat ghosts, not just dots. After a power pellet, ghosts are worth 200, 400, 800 and 1,600 in a row, so 3,000 if you catch all four. With five pellets, that’s up to 15,000 per level from ghosts against 2,950 from the whole maze. Steps:
- Open the game. Go to google.com/logos/2010/pacman10-i.html. The game loads and starts on its own.
- Add a second player (optional). Click Insert Coin again, or reload and click it twice, to bring in Ms. Pac-Man on W, A, S, D.
- Clear the corridors first. Eat the long rows above and below the letters before the ghosts leave scatter mode, and keep the power pellets for later.
- Bait, then eat the pellet. Wait next to a power pellet until two or more ghosts are close, then eat it and chase them down while they are blue.
- Use the side tunnels. The tunnels on the left and right edges slow the ghosts down, so run through them when you’re chased.
- Watch Blinky near the end. When the dots get low, the red ghost speeds up. Finish the last dots in an order that keeps you away from him.
Use scatter mode. On level 1 the ghosts head for their corners for 7 seconds, chase you for 20, scatter for 7 again, chase for 20, then scatter twice more for 5 seconds before chasing for good. From level 5 the scatters drop to 5 seconds and after the third one they never let up. Clear the open rows during those first scatter windows.
Grab the fruit when it shows up. From level 13 on it’s always the key at 5,000 points, which beats a full chain of ghosts.

FAQ
How many levels does Google Pac-Man have?
256. The Doodle copies the arcade game’s level counter, and when you reach level 256 it deliberately triggers the famous kill screen, where half the maze turns into garbage and the level can’t be finished. Levels 21 to 255 all use the same, hardest settings.
How do you play Google Pac-Man with 2 players?
Click Insert Coin a second time. Ms. Pac-Man joins the maze and both of you play at the same time, not in turns. Player 1 uses the arrow keys and player 2 uses W, A, S and D. Each player has their own score but you share one set of lives.
Where can you still play the Google Pac-Man Doodle?
The original 2010 game still runs on Google at google.com/logos/2010/pacman10-i.html. It starts by itself, works with the keyboard or by swiping on a phone, and needs no download or sign-in.
How many lives do you get in Google Pac-Man?
Three. You get one bonus life when your score passes 10,000, and in two-player mode each player can earn their own. Both players draw from the same pool, so one careless player can end the game for both.
Is there a level 257 in Google Pac-Man?
No. Level 256 is the last one. Like the 1980 arcade game, the right side of the maze breaks on that level, so you can’t eat enough dots to clear it.
How many dots are in the Google Pac-Man maze?
275 in total: 270 small dots worth 10 points each and 5 power pellets worth 50. The arcade maze has 244, with only 4 power pellets. The extra pellet sits inside the first G.
What is the easiest way to get a high score in Google Pac-Man?
Eat all four ghosts after each power pellet on the early levels, where they stay blue for 3 to 6 seconds. Four ghosts in a row pay 200, 400, 800 and 1,600, so one good pellet is worth more than every dot in the maze.
