How to play Football Stars
You start by picking your character, then drop straight into a match against one opponent. A match lasts 1.5 minutes, and the goal is simple: score more than the other player before the clock runs out.
- Move: use the left and right controls to run toward the ball or back toward your own goal.
- Header: the head button jumps for a header, which is your best answer to high, bouncing balls.
- Kick: the foot button strikes the ball. Each goal you score is worth 10 points.
The controls show on screen, so the game works on a phone or tablet as well as on a PC or Chromebook.
Your score carries over between matches
This is the part most players miss. Football Stars doesn’t reset your goal total after each game. The points you earn in one match add to your total for the next, so every goal is progress toward unlocking superpowers, even in a match you lose.
How to unlock Football Stars superpowers
Once your total score reaches 200 points (20 goals across your matches), superpowers open up. You activate them with the button in the top-right corner of the screen. There are three:
- Freeze: freezes your opponent for a few seconds so you can walk the ball in with no one in the way.
- Goalie: brings a goalkeeper onto your side to block the opponent’s shots.
- Giant Goal: makes the opponent’s net bigger, so your shots are far easier to land.
Tips to score more goals
- Stay between the ball and your goal. In a one-on-one game, the player who gets caught upfield gives away easy goals. Win the ball first, then attack.
- Use headers on bouncing balls. Instead of waiting for a high ball to land, jump into it with the head button and redirect it toward the net.
- Shoot early and often. With only 90 seconds per match, a quick shot that misses costs less than a slow build-up that gets blocked.
- Grind toward 200 first. Because points carry over, a few short matches spent just piling up goals will unlock the superpowers, and after that winning gets much easier.
- Save Freeze for close games. A few seconds of a frozen opponent is a guaranteed goal, so it’s worth the most when the score is level late in a match.
