In Short
- An unofficial Super Mario 64 browser port by Oliver Sauter (@olivers_tools) lets you play the full N64 classic in Chrome, Safari, or on mobile — no install required.
- Multiplayer supports up to 12 players in the same world, with live voice and video chat built in.
- You can open every stage from the start or play the classic star-unlock campaign; extra characters include Luigi, Yoshi, Wario, Toad, Donkey Kong, and Bowser Jr.
Want to run around Peach’s castle with a dozen friends tonight — in a browser tab? XDA Developers reports that Oliver Sauter (@olivers_tools) has shipped an unofficial Super Mario 64 port that runs entirely in the browser, including on phones, with multiplayer for up to 12 players and live voice/video chat. It is a fan project, not a Nintendo release, and it builds on existing open ports (sm64ex and the sm64coopdx co-op mod) with AI-assisted work. Treat it as a demo of what browsers can do, and expect Nintendo’s lawyers to notice if it stays popular.
What you can actually do in the Super Mario 64 browser port
Boot it and pick single-player or multiplayer. In multiplayer you can either unlock stages the classic way by collecting stars, or jump straight into a sandbox where every level is open — useful if you just want to mess around on Cool, Cool Mountain with friends. XDA’s writer said a short session ran surprisingly smoothly.
The roster goes beyond Mario: Luigi, Toad, Wario, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, and Bowser Jr. are playable. The multiplayer build also piles on odd mods (including a machine-gun option) plus the integrated chat. That mix is half the viral appeal — nostalgia plus chaotic co-op in one link.
How to try it (and what to watch for)
- Browser only: open the project link shared by Sauter on X; it targets modern desktop and mobile browsers. No app store download.
- Unofficial: this is a fan port of Nintendo’s IP. Availability can change overnight if hosts pull it — the same wave that briefly put GTA V and other classics in browsers this month.
- Credit / origin: it sits on sm64ex (a fork of sm64-port) and integrates sm64coopdx. It is not an original Nintendo web remaster.
If the link dies or feels sketchy, skip it. Fan ports often need a ROM on first launch or sit behind rotating hosts; do not paste credentials into random mirrors.

Why this story is blowing up now
October 2026 has been full of AI-assisted retro ports dropping into browsers overnight — from short-lived GTA V WebAssembly experiments to Minecraft-in-a-tweet clones. Sauter’s Mario 64 build stands out because the player-facing payoff is clear: full stages, friends in the same world, and chat without installing a client. That is the same “open a link and play” hook that pushed recent viral browser hits.
If you like making tiny games instead of waiting on fan ports, we covered how Google Playground turns a prompt into a browser game (US-only for now). For a chill ride that is already on our site, start with our Snow Rider 3D how-to.
