GTA 6 Lets You Shake the Cops by Changing Clothes, Rockstar Confirms

Rockstar says GTA 6 police track what you look like and wear. Lose a wanted level by changing outfits, getting a haircut or splitting Jason and Lucia up.

In Short

  • Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson says GTA 6 is built around “hit-and-run” crime: commit a crime, get out before the police arrive and avoid escalating, and you’re generally fine.
  • Police track what you look like and what you’re wearing. Shaking them can mean a new outfit from a clothing store or your car’s trunk, a haircut, or splitting Jason and Lucia up.
  • Hollow wanted stars mean the police know a crime happened but not who did it. GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

In GTA 6, getting away from the police is less about outrunning a red circle on the minimap and more about not being recognised. That’s the main gameplay takeaway from the full interview IGN published on October 7 with Rob Nelson, Head of Development and Co-Studio Head at Rockstar North, recorded while he played the game live during a 30-minute demo. GameSpot and Polygon both pulled the wanted-level details out of the transcript. Here’s what they mean for the way you’ll play.

Rockstar wants you to hit and run, not shoot it out

In the demo, an encounter with a stranger ends with an NPC pulling a gun on Lucia. Someone calls dispatch, and a one-star wanted level appears. GameSpot reports that if you get out of the area the police are responding to, you’re in the clear.

Nelson said the team tried to give players options: things can escalate quickly if you want them to, while players who don’t want trouble can try to avoid it, though “it’s not always possible!” He tied that to the story of Jason and Lucia as a couple on the run. “We’re really trying to encourage this hit-and-run style of gameplay,” he said.

You can still take on the police if you want. GameSpot notes that Rockstar doesn’t want GTA 6 to make you “all-powerful” the way GTA 5 often did, so going loud brings more consequences. Polygon adds that Rockstar calls a single full star no big deal and easy to lose, and that ending up in a proper police chase is more of an active choice.

The police remember your clothes, so change them

GTA 6 uses what Nelson calls a heat system. “The police are looking for me,” he explained in the demo. “We have this heat system, and they know what I look like and what I’m wearing.” Putting on a pair of glasses and a baseball cap isn’t enough, because the police still know your outfit. Nelson said you would need to visit a clothing store or call your personal vehicle, which keeps changes of clothes in the trunk.

According to GameSpot, other ways to cool off include getting a haircut or splitting up when Jason and Lucia are travelling together. Outfits can become compromised, and the police will remember which vehicle you were in and where you were last seen. Nelson’s summary: “so long as you don’t draw too much attention to yourself, you should be fine.”

Polygon points out that two protagonists add a choice of their own. You can keep the pair together for double the firepower or split them up to reduce the heat, then text the other one afterwards to check they got away.

Hollow stars mean the police don’t know it was you yet

The wanted meter also has a new state. Polygon reports that GTA 6 adds hollow stars, which show that the authorities know a crime has been committed but don’t yet know who did it. Combined with the heat system, that means slipping away quietly before you’re identified should usually be cheaper than fighting your way out.
