In Short
- Engadget reports a PS5 Pro shortage driven by high demand and limited retailer stock ahead of GTA 6.
- German outlet Playfront claims Sony told partners supply constraints could last through early 2027; Sony has not confirmed that on the record.
- GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S — buying a Pro in time looks difficult for many players.
If you planned to upgrade to a PlayStation 5 Pro before GTA 6, the window is closing fast. As reported by Engadget (Alec Hively, Oct. 11), the console is already hard to find at normal prices, and Grand Theft Auto 6’s November 19 launch is expected to make demand worse. Engadget cites German outlet Playfront, which reportedly saw a partner memo in which Sony described “temporary market supply constraints and high demand” lasting through early 2027 at the earliest. Sony has not confirmed that timeline publicly.
PS5 Pro Stock Is Tight — and Resale Prices Show It
The PS5 Pro launched in November 2024 with a stronger GPU, better ray tracing, 2TB storage and AI upscaling. Nearly two years later, Engadget says supply still lags demand. MSRP has climbed well above the original $699.99 ask — Engadget notes prices about $200 higher — and resellers are pushing further. One Best Buy marketplace listing cited by Engadget priced a Pro around $1,539.
Japan has already used lottery systems and playtime rules to limit flippers. Chip scarcity tied to the AI boom is part of the bottleneck, Engadget notes, echoing broader hardware price pressure across laptops and memory. None of that is a player’s problem to solve — it just means walking into a store and grabbing a Pro before November is far from guaranteed.
GTA 6 Will Likely Make the PS5 Pro Shortage Worse
GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. No PC date has been announced, so console buyers are the only early audience. Rockstar’s previews have shown the game at 30 fps, and while GTA 6 is marketed as PS5 Pro Enhanced, neither Rockstar nor Sony has detailed how the Pro version differs. Rumors of 60 fps on Pro remain unconfirmed; Rockstar has kept talking about 30 fps on both consoles.
Even so, many fans still want the Pro for sharper image quality and ray tracing. That demand, piled onto an already constrained supply, is why Engadget’s headline consequence is clear: you may not get a PS5 Pro in time for launch night. A base PS5 still plays GTA 6 on day one — the Pro is a premium, not a requirement.
What to do now: set stock alerts with major retailers, avoid unverified “rare stock” links that look like scams, and decide whether a Pro upgrade is worth waiting for versus playing on a standard PS5 or Series X|S. Treat the early-2027 supply claim as reported via Playfront, not as an official Sony promise.
